Painting WIP

So, I finally started doing more art apart from sketching... and, well, animating at work.

It's a huge WIP, and I really have no idea when I will consider it finished. It's nothing amazing, but it's a start to hopefully some better paintings to come. I plan on adding some red highlights to it, as well as a red ink splatter emitting from the tip of the "gun". Suggestions and critique always welcome, as usual!

So, it's been a year since I've created my demo. One year since I've started working... And I've realized very quickly how horrible all of my previous work looks to me now. WOW!

I am here to tell you to NOT look at my demo reel until I have an updated reel. ...Please :)

I am, however, uploading some new sketches. Please feel free to send your feedback to me- I love critique!

But honestly, I think the real reason I am doing this... Is for myself to SEE how I am able to grow as an artist. I can already see an improvement in my drawings, just after one year. And well, as for animation... Don't even get me started. The difference is astronomical!

I had a pretty decent day in a life drawing class that I sat in on today. I tried to stylize my drawings a little more, and add a little bit more of a story behind the drawings. Here are a few of the ones that I liked the most. Please critique! I would love your feedback!

I took some time to do some quick sketches of a few friends while at the beach, etc. Unfortunately, I had to take pictures of the sketches. No working scanner in the vicinity.

This was the first assignment from the beginning of my last quarter- March/April of 2010?

Here's the run down on our assignments. We are given 2 weeks/assignment. The first week is solely 2D planning, including shooting our own reference videos, thumbnail sketching and 2D planning (roughly animated on paper).

The second week is spent on the computer, that is- if our planning works out. If not, we have to tackle redoing our 2D as well as completing an animation on Maya.

This one was supposed to have our robot character experience an obvious change of emotion.

My gag on this one, however, didn't make a whole lot of sense. If I plan on putting this in my demo, I may have to re-think the idea.

...We got to do some tonal in life drawing recently. I have come to the realization that I definitely should use a hard charcoal next time, rather than grease pencil. Ah well, I still got one that I didn't mind.

I tried a experimenting with style also. Tell me what you think of it.

So, I figured it was about time I started posting some of my works. Everything I post is meant to be critiqued. Everything good and bad, I would greatly appreciate the feedback. Nothing in this world can ever be perfect, and that especially goes for animation! Please help me improve :)

I am currently attending the Art Institute in Burnaby/Vancouver for Animation. I have been here since October of 2008, and will be finishing this September.

I am from a small town called Invermere B.C., nestled within the Rocky Mountains.

WHAT MADE ME CHOOSE ANIMATION?

...WELLL....

I was inspired to become an animator after watching Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas, and The Corpse Bride. I found the animators of those films absolutely fascinating. The possibility of creating life in little puppets like those seen in Burton's films blew my mind. It struck an interest in me, which budded from an interest in stop motion. From there on, I began participating in all drama projects, film projects, and kept at work in the art and creative writing rooms in my high school. I even created a stop motion short for film class.

Ultimately, I decided to become an animator after realizing that my passion lay within acting, film, story and traditional art. I couldn't choose just one form of art. Being able to combine EVERYTHING I love in to one art form just seemed too good to be true. And the fact that I love working with computers definitely helped concrete my decision in becoming a 3D character animator as well. The Art Institute of Vancouver definitely seemed to be a great fit.

I will be posting some works as I progress towards graduating.
